[Warden Filter]

I have noticed an increase in talks about building a better sense of community here on the Barge as of late. It's certainly not a bad conversation to have because regardless of whether or not a particular individual is a warden or an inmate, we are responsible for ourselves and for one another.

For that to happen, I believe we as wardens need to take a look at ourselves. Our main focus is, of course, the inmates. Different reasons have brought us here, but regardless of our motivations, the rehabilitation of the inmates is our top priority. To do that best, we need to be at our best. I do not mean to say that mistakes cannot happen, but rather that we must rely on one another for our care as we do to care for the inmates. Truthfully, I have not been here long enough to assess the support in place, but I worry we are not taking care of ourselves enough.

That said, I also wonder if perhaps there is a way to include the inmates in such a system, to encourage a healthy and better sense of camaraderie with everyone on board. I know not every inmate deserves the same amount of trust or input necessarily given their current states and the recent wrongs they have committed, but I think more inclusion could greatly benefit relations between everyone regardless of their status.

It may seem hypocritical of me to propose this only to the wardens for now, but we are the ones with the power to institute these changes.

I just ask that everyone reflect upon this and please offer any opinion you may have.

It's a good idea. As far as including inmates - I mean, I think we could just include them in the conversation. Some of them are going to be jerks about it, but that doesn't mean they should be cut out, and I think most [well at least some] of us can manage not to take attitude personally.

I think a lot of them will. They're not stupid, you know? A lot of them are smarter than a lot of us, so, hey. Could only be helpful.

Well, that and they're part of the process. If they don't have a say in how it works then they have no reason to work at all.

Yeah, no, we don't.

So - any ideas on how to do this logistically? Other than making public announcements, open calls for input . . .

Team sports are a good idea. I could help with that. I don't know how I feel about excluding anybody, but - there are definitely people who are more capable of support than others.

Right. And if the option's not open they might not even realize they're capable of helping.

Well, you're the one who opened the subject. Somebody should've done that a long time ago.
