I have noticed an increase in talks about building a better sense of community here on the Barge as of late. It's certainly not a bad conversation to have because regardless of whether or not a particular individual is a warden or an inmate, we are responsible for ourselves and for one another.
For that to happen, I believe we as wardens need to take a look at ourselves. Our main focus is, of course, the inmates. Different reasons have brought us here, but regardless of our motivations, the rehabilitation of the inmates is our top priority. To do that best, we need to be at our best. I do not mean to say that mistakes cannot happen, but rather that we must rely on one another for our care as we do to care for the inmates. Truthfully, I have not been here long enough to assess the support in place, but I worry we are not taking care of ourselves enough.
That said, I also wonder if perhaps there is a way to include the inmates in such a system, to encourage a healthy and better sense of camaraderie with everyone on board. I know not every inmate deserves the same amount of trust or input necessarily given their current states and the recent wrongs they have committed, but I think more inclusion could greatly benefit relations between everyone regardless of their status.
It may seem hypocritical of me to propose this only to the wardens for now, but we are the ones with the power to institute these changes.
I just ask that everyone reflect upon this and please offer any opinion you may have.

[That's the opinion, and it's completely sarcastic, but he's still here.]
You got any specific ideas how to go about this, sweetheart?
[ Filter ]
Do you have an open mind for any ideas at all, sir?
[ Filter ]
And, of course, now his cursory smirk is broadening smoothly.]
Oh, I got an open mind for all kindsa ideas. But you're the one who brought it up, and anyway - ladies first.

But I believe including inmates in discussions about doling out punishments for example could be beneficial. I realize that some would be resentful or perhaps too harsh given their histories, but not all will necessarily react in that manner. Many of them do not feel as though they are being listened to from what I have observed. Allowing them space to speak as part of the conversation instead of an outside party would help in building trust and a sense of community.
I also believe creating some sort of activity that's unrelated to rehabilitation in a direct manner that both wardens and inmates could engage in as equals would be beneficial. It would provide a time and place where everyone could simply be people for a time instead of wardens and inmates.

Easing relations between them would be a nice thing, though.

This whole level of ownership and permissions nonsense can get out of hand.

I'm a bit wary of anything involvin' any more rules or structure [read: allergic to structure and ignores any and all rules she finds inconvenient] but I'm all in favour of makin' more connections and takin' care of each other better.
Personally, I've been lookin' into takin' over the spa and makin' it more of a Barge thing. No one's really running it these days and I reckon it could be a big 'elp to everyone.

[Snow & her better late than never attitude.]
That sounds like an absolutely wonderful idea and something that would benefit everyone.
Re: [warden filter]
Exactly, love - we've got all the time in the world 'ere, any road. Well, except when we 'aven't. I'm a bit up to me ears in weapons tech right now, I might leave it till after this port that's got everyone's knickers twisted. By then I reckon we'll all really need a bit of luxury.

I think you're right. Completely. We all come from different places, for different reasons, but we all want the same thing - to help people. And part of that is making the Barge a place that feels...safe. Comfortable. At least, you know, socially. [She tries to hide the sudden tightening of her features, but doesn't quite manage.]
We can't stop the floods, or the breaches, or make the ports any safer, but - we can do our best to make this environment better.
[Her brow furrows, a little.] I think a big part of that is communication. If you need help - you know, helping, then don't be afraid to ask for it. And make sure Inmates aren't afraid, either.
And I agree with Kon. Giving people more stuff to do, fun stuff, would be great.
I think we should make sure to support Inmates without Wardens, too.

I also agree about the inmates who lack a warden. I think perhaps they are more easily overlooked and forgotten except when it comes to exploring ports. They should have that kind of support while they're on the Barge as well.

[An earnest nod.] Maybe we can organise something? Like - I don't know, specific people to go to for certain things?

Thanks for helping out with Alex and Chris, by the way.

It was no trouble. Frankly, I'm surprised by Alex's behavior. I would not have expected him to act in such a way. I know he must have his reasons for it, but there is little excuse for him to continue instigating fights like that between the two of them.

That's just kinda how some guys act sometimes. It's hard to explain.
