[Warden Filter]

I have noticed an increase in talks about building a better sense of community here on the Barge as of late. It's certainly not a bad conversation to have because regardless of whether or not a particular individual is a warden or an inmate, we are responsible for ourselves and for one another.

For that to happen, I believe we as wardens need to take a look at ourselves. Our main focus is, of course, the inmates. Different reasons have brought us here, but regardless of our motivations, the rehabilitation of the inmates is our top priority. To do that best, we need to be at our best. I do not mean to say that mistakes cannot happen, but rather that we must rely on one another for our care as we do to care for the inmates. Truthfully, I have not been here long enough to assess the support in place, but I worry we are not taking care of ourselves enough.

That said, I also wonder if perhaps there is a way to include the inmates in such a system, to encourage a healthy and better sense of camaraderie with everyone on board. I know not every inmate deserves the same amount of trust or input necessarily given their current states and the recent wrongs they have committed, but I think more inclusion could greatly benefit relations between everyone regardless of their status.

It may seem hypocritical of me to propose this only to the wardens for now, but we are the ones with the power to institute these changes.

I just ask that everyone reflect upon this and please offer any opinion you may have.

As for including everyone in the discussion - good luck. Even more luck having to do with punishments. I don't think it's a bad idea, necessarily, but wardens get a bit tetchy with their inmates and all.

There's no reason that they should though. We are here for the benefit of the inmates, not to pad the fragile egos of the wardens.

Yes. Tournaments have always been a great means of uniting and encouraging cooperation among my people in my world. I'd imagine something similar could afford the same here on the Barge.

It's not about padding egos. It's about closing ranks. This is just a group of people - wardens, inmates, whatever, some people are team players and some people don't want anything to do with anything else.

Not saying it's right, not saying don't try, I'm just saying don't make the title "warden" mean more'n it does.

They tried to get baseball started in the CES for a while. There's a basketball hoop in the gym. Plenty-a space on the deck. What kinda tournaments?

There would be events such as jousting and one-on-one combat. It would be a little too dangerous to engage in here on the Barge.

There's always gambling. That's no-contact.

Gambling is a stand-alone activity and not a sport. It can only brew discontent and accusations of cheating which could easily escalate.

I cannot say I'm familiar with poker or pool though I am aware of dice.

No contact allowed, sometimes they're played in teams, there's tournaments and shit, and... it's pretty impossible to cheat at pool, but poker's pretty much got it built into the rules.

But I would imagine it would take skill to cheat even if it is built within the rules themselves.

And are those skills you'd truly prefer the inmates master?

I don't think treating them like the people they're going to encounter back out in the world are saints is a good alternative, no.

You're being very close-minded about the value in learning how to identify when others are cheating, and knowing how to cheat them right back.

You would think it justified to cheat someone simply because they cheated you?

That depends on how it goes down.

But mostly I'm interested in knowing about it.

On who it is, what they're doing, and why. If it's someone honestly trying to screw me over, then yeah, I'm gonna screw 'em back if I can.

If it's just someone messing with me, well. I still like to know.

You seriously don't know why it would be different if someone was out to actively fuck you over as opposed to just being bored?

I understand their intentions may perhaps be different and I understand that it's important to be aware of others deceiving you, but I'm not sure where the justification for retaliation lies exactly.

Just because their intent may be more malicious than simply "messing" with you is not proper justification. It's just creating a vicious, nearly unbreakable cycle.

I didn't say anything about retaliation - although now you mention it, I'm pretty okay with it, sometimes.

But I always prefer to know when someone is about to screw me over, so at the very least I can get out of the way.
